Jackets Outlast Rangers 5-3
The Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the New York Rangers 5-3 Thursday evening at home in Nationwide Arena. The win moves Columbus to (19-21-1) on the season and New York to (28-12-4).
Artemi Panarin started the game off with the first score of the night at 1:29. Fellow Ranger Barclay Goodrow followed with a second goal at 4:44. The Blue jackets quickly answered with a goal from Gustav Nyquist at 5:49. Not long after, Goodrow was sent to the box for tripping at 6:40. That penalty set up a power play goal from captain Boone Jenner at 7:28. The Rangers garnered themselves another penalty at 14:39, this time for holding on Ryan Lindgren. The blue jackets were unable to take advantage of the second power play and the period ended with two scores apiece.
Columbus continued their momentum through the second. Sean Kuraly found the goal at 6:18, and Boone Jenner scored once again at 12:27 for his 18th goal of the season. The remainder of the second period was without penalty and without answer from the Rangers.
The Jackets were plagued by penalties in the third period, with the first coming from Jake Bean at 5:55 for holding. New York had their first power play of the night as well as their first goal since the early game courtesy of Mika Zibanejad at 7:12. Once again, Jake Bean was penalized, this time for interference at 8:23. Kuraly put the final nail in the Rangers coffin with a second score of the night at 17:46, putting Columbus up 5-3. Add in a minor penalty from Gus Nyquist at 18:19 and the game was over.
