On Sunday afternoon, the college football playoff committee announced on ESPN as to who got into the playoff and where they were ranked. And it’s official: Ohio State is in.
The Buckeyes (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten) are the four-seed and will play the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (13-0, 9-0 SEC champions) on New Year’s Eve at 8 p.m. ET in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.
Michigan (13-0, 9-0 Big Ten champions) is No. 2 and will face 3rd-ranked TCU (12-1, 9-1 Big 12).
This will be only the second matchup ever between the Buckeyes and Bulldogs. Their only game came on New Year’s Day in 1993 in the Citrus Bowl where Georgia took home the win, 21-14.
There was some conjecture as to where the Buckeyes might land but it seemed a sure thing they were in after previously No. 4 ranked USC was walloped in the Pac-12 championship game by No. 11 Utah on Friday night, 47-24.
But there was also talk of Alabama potentially sneaking despite being ranked No. 6, especially after TCU (12-1, 9-0 Big 12) lost in their conference championship game to No. 10 Kansas State (10-3, 7-2). The Crimson Tide's argument was that even though they had two losses, both of them were on the road to ranked teams by a total of four points and both were on the last play of the game. Tennessee beat them 52-49 on a 40-yard Chase McGrath field goal with time expiring and LSU knocked them off 32-31 when they converted a two-pointer in overtime after the Crimson Tide scored on their first possession.
However, the committee has yet to select a two-loss team into the top four and they didn’t start this year as they ranked ‘Bama at No. 5 and one of the two teams to beat them, Tennessee, at No. 6.
We will have more information to come on what both Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and Georgia head coach Mark Richt have to say about the upcoming matchup.
