Jackets Clip Red Wings
The Columbus Blue Jackets needed to break a two game losing streak. And breaking it they did against the Detroit Red Wings on a Monday night in Columbus, Ohio.
While it looked like these Jackets may drop their third game in a row, they managed to find an extra gear as the game went on and came back from a two goal deficit to take all the points.
FIRST PERIOD
Really like how youthfully aggressive this Jackets team can be when they have the puck. It's a good thing.... I think. If nothing else, it makes this team enjoyable to watch because they are taking chances. And while they started the period peppering Thomas Greiss with 5 shots on goal in the first 5 minutes, the Detroit goalie stood tall. As momentum swung back and forth, it was the Red Wings who caught the first break when Dylan Larking found a loose puck in a scramble in the Columbus crease and directed it into the back of the net to break the deadlock with just over 5 minutes left in the period.
Columbus seemed to lose all focus and momentum for the rest of the period and were lucky to finish it out only down by one goal.
SECOND PERIOD
The Jackets started the period with a bit of a hangover from the first. Detroit looked more dangerous and Columbus couldn't catch any breaks. 4:23 into the period, Michael Rasmussen wristed a shot from above the right circle that slipped past Merzlinkins to double the visitors' lead.
FINALLY, with 6:53 left in the period, Boone Jenner finds a rebounded puck at his feet in the crease and puts it right in for the Jackets' first goal of the night.
Something must have awoken in the home team as they followed that goal with ANOTHER. It was Adam Boqvist with his first of the season and as a Blue Jacket, who followed up a Yegor Chinakove blocked shot with a rebound from a very tight angle to tie the game at 2 and brought the sleepy Monday night crowd TO LIFE.
THIRD PERIOD
Columbus looked to be the better team for most of the period in shots and opportunities, but Greiss held strong in the net to keep the team even. As it went for most of this game, Detroit managed to score against the run of play and retake the lead on a Lucas Raymond tally with 6:29 left in the period. But the Jackets came right back on a breakaway from Chinakhov who wristed it past Greiss for his first career NHL goal and re-level the game to 3-3.
The pressure from the Jackets FINALLY paid off as Zach Werenski sent a slap shot from distance past Greiss to give Columbus it's first lead of the night with 1:19 left in the game. Shortly thereafter, Alexandre Texier iced the game with an empty net goal to bring the final score to 5-3.
FINAL THOUGHTS
- It's not mentioned much but Elvis Merlikins played a SOLID game. In fact, if it wasn't for his heroics at certain points during the game, Columbus could have easily lost its third straight.
- This team is YOUNG. I may say that every game as a reminder. They also had THIRTY EIGHT SHOTS ON GOAL. While a lot of shot were right at Greiss, they eventually wore him out.
- Two more NEW players got their first NHL career goals tonight in Adam Boqvist and Yegor Chinakhov.
- After a three game home stint, the Jackets are back on the road to face Arizona, Las Vegas, and Buffalo before returning home for a two-game home stand starting on November 24th.
